  • Outdoor education in Aotearoa New Zealand: A new vision for the twenty first century

    Outdoor education in a variety of guises has a rich history in Aotearoa New Zealand, dating back more than 100 years. Learning experiences in the outdoors have a strong and oft en much-loved place in our collective education memories, from environmental field trips in the mountain valleys of Aoraki/Mount Cook to school camps at Port Waikato; from primary school stream study and restoration projects to multiday alpine journeys for tertiary students. However, as we move into the second decade of the twenty-fi rst century, the world we live in is vastly diff erent from the one in which many of us developed those memories. What does that mean for education, and more specifi cally, what does that mean for educational experiences that take place in outdoor environments? This book attends to these questions from a forward looking position. It shares a vision of outdoor education which moves beyond the proud histories of twentieth century school camps, fi eld studies and outdoor pursuits to one which addresses the exigent and contemporary issues confronting educators and students alike. The twenty-first century seems to be characterised by great uncertainty and rapid change. Issues such as climate change, growing inequality between the haves and have-nots, and rising levels of consumption and waste are increasingly entering the fray of our everyday lived realities. So too are bigger (or indeed smaller), better, and faster technologies. Cultural norms are constantly being challenged, contested, and reshaped. How then does outdoor education wrestle with and speak to these and other issues?

It is particularly accessible to the inexperienced counsellor or psychotherapist who is often looking for some guidance on a particular topic without having to read a whole book on the subject or read something more technical. The book covers basic emotional issues such as anger, shame, anxiety, stress, grief, depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide risk, and behavioural issues like addiction, phobias, and compulsive behaviours such as self-harm and obsessive compulsive disorder. There are also chapters on relationship issues such as divorce, abuse of various kinds, dysfunctional relationships, adoption, blended families, and strategies for couple counseling. There are two chapters on personality disorders. A biblical viewpoint is added at the end of each chapter for the Christian counsellor and pastor. There is an extensive list of about 500 references along with internet references throughout, providing a rich source for further reading. The chapters are mainly independent with minimum cross-referencing.

    Many people today believe that Christianity will not stand up to a scientific or intellectual investigation, and that science has all the answers. Such an attitude shows an ignorance of the wealth of available philosophical arguments and scientific information that Dr. Seber taps into in this book. Initially, he shows that mathematics and science are limited in what they can prove in spite of modern advances. He then summarizes his material using basic questions as ten chapter headings: Does God exist, is there a spiritual dimension, do we have free will, is the Bible reliable, who is Jesus, do miracles occur, why does God allow suffering and evil, is Christianity a blessing or a curse to society, what about evolution, and how can we get to know God? The reader may have other questions and a number are considered within each chapter, such as problems with philosophical materialism and atheism. He draws his material from many sources including statistics, physics, cosmology, genetics, philosophy, history, biochemistry, theology, psychology, archaeology, and biology. Comparatively, new subjects like epigenetics, chaos theory, and quantum mechanics, that many people are not aware of, are brought into the picture. These topics change our thinking about reality.

It begins by tracing the only New Zealand tour of Eugen Sandow, the most famous strongman of his age. Sandow's body delighted his audiences and inspired many to reshape and then reveal their toned torsos. His rich New Zealand legacy is examined as Daley takes us through the gyms of the early twentieth century, the rise of beauty contests, the new crazes of swimming and sunbathing, the advent of organised nudism and the display of young bodies in parks and playgrounds.
